It can happen to anyone. You feel like you can't swim. You feel like you can't breathe. You feel like you might die. 10 minutes later, sat on the edge of the lake, you feel like an idiot. You shouldn't. It can happen to anyone.
While the swim is the shortest section in triathlon it is often the part that causes people most problems. In this short blog we'll look at what causes open water race panics, what we can do to deal with them, and how we can prevent them happening.

Thanks for this. I do longer distance open water swims and sometimes I overcome my nerves but they can return if the conditions get rough. I have experienced and enjoyed rough conditions previously but now they induce panic. Do you have any thoughts on this as a contributing factor?

Hi do you have any advice on how to deal with a phobia of jellyfish? I know they're there but I rarely see them, and just the thought of seeing one sends me into a panic where I feel like I can't breathe!

I would like to think I'm an experienced and confident open water swimmer but I have suffered panic attacks myself.....and for no apparent reason. No anxiety pre-race but on a handful of times things have gone pair shaped. I've had to stop. Move out of the way of other swimmers and compose myself. I've found if I try to continue too quickly I hyperventilate again. Rolling onto my back to inhale maximum oxygen, then doing a bit of breaststroke usually gets my breathing pattern back to normal. Then I attempt to continue doing freestyle slowly until I'm comfortable. If this doesn't work I'll repeat the process. So far I've not had to abandon a race and have worked hard at not beating myself up about it.
